How Green Is Your Internet?

By browsing the internet and watching videos, you are hurting the environment. For every second of video you watch on the internet it puts 0.2 grams of CO2 in the air. When you count all the YouTube videos watched, which equates to 2 billion every day, also considering the length to be 10 seconds. That means 4,000 tons of CO2 is put in the air every single day.

In an animated infographic, created by Dan Ilic and designed by Patrick Clair, every thing seems to keep going down hill. Our internet usage is dirty, as clean as we think it is we are killing our air with our usage. Now this video isn’t saying that everything on the internet is killing us, it is just stating that the means that we use to power the internet isn’t exactly the best. The infographic calls out coal powered data centers is the root of the problem. The power consumption of the 44 million servers that powers the internet is unreal and could power a medium-sized country.

Don’t take this video the wrong way, this is nothing compared to most other industries. This video is purely showing us the ramifications of using the internet. The cost/benefit ratio of the internet is positive for most people. Perhaps the most positive that we’ve ever seen on our history.
