Apple Announces The iPhone 5

After months of rumors and speculation, Apple has finally announced the new iPhone.

The iPhone 5 has a new Apple A6 processor, which Apple claims that it is 2 times faster than the current iPhone 4S in both CPU and GPU, and yet Apple claims that it is consumes less battery than the iPhone 4S as Apple claims that the new iPhone can have 8 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing, 30 hours of video and 225 hours of standby.

It has a unibody aluminum body with a glass screen and it is 7.6 millimeters thick, 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S and it is about 89 grams heavy. Apple claims that the new 16:9 4 inch screen panoramic screen has 44% more saturation than the iPhone, and bundles with the touchscreen senor built-in. It comes packed on a single radio chip for voice and data and has GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE connectivity on the cellular side and a dual-channel 5GHz Wi-Fi a/b/g/n. Additionally, it has a new 8MP camera, which has the same resolution as the iPhone 4S, but Apple claims that the camera is thinner. It has three microphones, on the top, back and bottom, five magnet transducers for the speakers.

With the new iPhone, comes with a new dock connector, called “Lightning”. Compared to the previous dock connector, the new dock connector is 80% smaller and has an all digital 8 connector design with improved durability. It also has an adaptive interface which means that the connector depending on the kind of features you need in the connection and the connector can be inserted in either direction. In addition to the new dock connector, Apple announced a dock connector converter to go with the iPhone 5 and Apple said that they are working with accessories manufacture to include the new connector on their next batch of products. In addition to the new dock connector, the new iPhone headphone connector is moved to the bottom of the phone and nearby the lightning port.

In addition to the new iPhone, Apple officially debuts iOS 6. Some of the things announced is a new improved Siri, passbook, FaceTime over 3G, iCloud Tabs, a new Maps app, Facebook integration, and Wifi + Cellular.

Apple announced that the iPhone will be available in Sprint, AT&T and Verizion and will all support LTE in the US, Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin, etc in Canada, and various networks in Europe. The pricing for the iPhone 5 is $199 for 16GB, $299 for the 32GB, and $399 for the 64 GB with a 2 year contract and preorders start 14 and ship to multiple countries including the US, Canada, France, Japan on the 21. The iPhone 4S will move down the chain for $99 with a two-year contract and the iPhone 4 will be free with a 2 year contract.
