ioSafe Releases New Disaster-proof Rugged Portable SSD, HDD

Ever wanted to use your hard drive in the sand? Maybe under water, or in… aircraft fuel? Well if you do, the new ioSafe Rugged Portable HDD is perfect for you. This new hard drive can withstand just about any misfortune you could think of.

Along with submerging your HDD under aircraft fuel (who knows why anyone would accidental put it in aircraft fuel) the aluminum version is also safe under 2500 lbs of crush pressure, or the titanium version at 5,000 lbs of pressure. Even if you dropped it at 20 feet, the SSD model wouldn’t break one bit.

The aluminum model can also be submerged in salt or fresh water for up to three days at depths of 10 feet or below, or 30 feet for the SSD or titanium model. Even constant exposure to UV, rain, salt fog, icing, blowing sand and dust, or freezing rain for 24 hours. Not convinced this is incredible? You can use your aluminum model at 15,000 feet, and 30,000 feet for the SSD or titanium model.

Destroying this piece of hardware is near impossible; if it were an accident, at least. Most people won’t leave a hard drive in water for 3 days, nor try to crush it at 5,000 lbs.

The ioSafe Rugged Portable hard drives support USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and FireWire is expected in March 2011. You can buy this hard drive at capacities of 250 GB to 1 TB, and the SSD version at 256 GB or 512 GB. The prices range from $150 for the aluminum 250 GB HDD model to the 512 GB titanium SSD model for $3500. All of the drives come with a 12-month data recovery warrant.
