Microsoft Finalizes Acquisition of Skype

Microsoft acquisition of Skype has finally happened. Five months after the announcement that Microsoft is acquiring Skype, it is finalized. The money has been exchanged, and the regulatory problems has been resolved. With the $8.5 billion deal, Skype’s CEO Tony Bates will be president of of the Skype division in Microsoft corporation, and will have to report to Steve Balmer now. Also, with the acquisition of Skype, many of the current employees of Skype will stay within the company at offices across the world (United States, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, United Kingdom, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, and Luxembourg).

On Microsoft’s official Blog today, Tony Bates seemed enthusiastic about the acquisition. He describes it as a combination of two “disruptive, innovative, software-oriented companies.” Though they were unsurprisingly enthusiastic of the acquisition, they were not specific about the roles within Microsoft upon the finalization of the acquisition of Skype. Only said that the companies will “remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies’ efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers.”

Though Microsoft has finished the completion of the acquisition of Skype, they have stated that both companies will “will remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies’ efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers.”
